Where is Mistletoe Bay?
The facility offers an experience that is unique in New Zealand, where visitors young and old will learn hands-on how to live sustainably in a coastal ecosystem. The trustees are volunteers with a passion for a sustainable future and a commitment to keeping a small piece of paradise protected and available for everyone.
Mistletoe Bay Eco Village provides an outstanding outdoor education facility for both primary and secondary students.
The Mistletoe Bay and Marlborough Sounds environment offers stimulating and safe natural surroundings to help students experience New Zealand's native bush and sea environments while staying in a sustainable and environmentally friendly eco-village.
The purpose of our camp is...
To provide outdoor education opportunities where students are encouraged to-
- become capable and confident citizens
- connect with others and their environment
- develop powerful key life skills
- strengthen relationships with their peers, adults and teachers
- persevere in the face of difficulty
- have an increased awareness of ecological sustainability
When is our camp?
Room 8 will be on camp from the 18th-21st October. We will meet in Room 8 at 7.30am and depart at 8am. We will return to NCS on the 21st by 4pm. (Keep an eye on this site for any changes).
What is the accomodation and kitchen like?
We have booked 6 whare. Each whare has it’s own bathroom area and bunk beds. There is also a sofa bed in each room and dining table in each. Parent helpers will each be responsible for one whare/group of students and will use the sofa bed in the whare if needed. There is also a parent whare with four spare beds should any problems arise. Preparation of meals will be the responsibility of parents, with assistance as required from student ‘duty groups’. Students will rinse their own dishes and then use the dishwasher (supervised). During the day separate toilet facilities are used (ie. Not in facilities in the whares).
What activities will we be doing?
Students will participate in a range of structured activities. These include:
Environmental Sustainability Programme
Marine Study with Richard DeHamel
Walk up to the Hilltop Lookout and trig station
Kayaking
Sailing
Archery
Orienteering
Bush Study
Glow worm trail
Animal Survival Game
What safety precautions are there for activities?
The camp is a safe environment for children. High standards are expected of the children in terms of behaviour. Upon our arrival at the camp there will be a briefing on what the children are allowed to do and where they are allowed to go. At all times the parent helpers and myself will be on 'duty' to supervise the children.
The two water based activities, the kayaking and sailing, are provided by the Marlborough Sounds Adventure Company. Copies of the RAMS are available from me if you would like to view them.
Unless is is scorching hot, the children will not be swimming during free time, but if the opportunity does arise it will be fully supervised by myself and some parent helpers. The water at Mistletoe Bay is very shallow, and swimming off the wharf will not be allowed.
What safety precautions are there for medical issues?
All children and parent helpers will have filled out a health profile. An adult will be in charge of administering any medications, and these will be kept in the parent helper whare. All medications need to be labelled and bagged clearly with the doses and child's name.
Some children will be used to administering their own medications at home. If you are happy for your child to do this at camp that is fine, please still let us know so we can monitor this.
Full medical kits will kept with us during activities and leisure times.
The nearest medical centres are in Havelock and Picton. You will be contacted immediately should any more serious issues arise.
